I’ve heard a lot people saying that Donald Trump is secretly helping Hillary Clinton get into office by destroying the Republican Party by being such a terrible option for president that people have no choice but to vote for her. Instead of stealing the election, just rig the whole thing? While that’s a terrific story that I’d love to believe, it seems too convenient and simplistic. It seems more likely to me that both Clinton and Trump are incredibly competitive and have the ego prerequisite necessary to even want to be President at all. Contrary to what many believe, Trump is not a stupid person. He saw an opportunity and took it. Anybody with half a brain could see that Mitt Romney being the best the GOP had to offer meant that the party was gasping for air and desperately clutching for a rope. Donald Trump announced that he had a rope and then pushed the Republican establishment’s head underwater.
Some people believe that it makes more sense that Trump is helping Clinton as opposed to seriously running, but maybe that’s because the story is more comforting-
"There’s no way Trump will become President, because the system is rigged and they would never allow it. This is just public manipulation by the Illuminati."
An incredibly preposterous sentiment that shows how much fear there is in embracing the chaotic truth- Donald Trump could become President. The very system that allowed a black man to become President means a predatory capitalist hair job like Trump can, too. The possibility is very real and no amount of storytelling will prevent that.
Conspiratorial thinking is nothing new. It’s as old as human thought. Our brains having formed a symbolic structure like language to communicate, seek continuously to make sense of things. Think of all the gods, the creation stories, the Tooth Fairy, the multitude of stories we tell children and used to tell ourselves about how the world worked. The sun used to be a god riding a chariot across the sky. The universe was created from the mating of a tiger and a bear, and so forth. Stories are comforting, because the reality- we really have no idea why we’re here and we could all be destroyed at any moment, is too harrowing to continually live with. How could you ever let loose and have fun knowing that the nature of reality is chaos and at any moment an asteroid can slam into Earth and cause a mass extinction?
There is a strain of thought in America that began developing in the late 90s with the rise of white nationalist paramilitary groups and religious cults with compounds. The massacre in Waco, TX of the Branch Davidians and their leader David Koresh, Ruby Ridge, and the Oklahoma City Bombing came with it the rise of Alex Jones and the conspiracy movement in the US. 9/11 was a steroid shot for distrust of the government, and ever subsequent disaster and tragedy has been spun into some kind of psychological disinformation campaign by the CIA or the Rothschilds or whoever seems to make sense. Following Columbine, Newtown, Paris, and now Orlando, the false-flag proponents have put forward the narrative that actors are hired to play fleeing victims, accusations of camera trickery are hurled around, and a general dismissal of any fact presented by the media is used to prove their point- It’s all lies created by the media to create a state of fear and get people to give up their guns. That’s right they’re coming for your guns! It’s all a charade just like the moon landing was so that they can take our guns. That’s why we keep having gun massacres in the US because they’re taking away our guns. That’s why guns sales skyrocket after every mass shooting 'cuz they’re taking away our guns! What a crock of shit. There is a gun lobby in this country and there’s nothing that they want more is to make sure we sell more guns and from a profit perspective, it makes sense to look forward to the next mass shooting because that means a bump in sales.
Another declaration put forward by the conspiracy-minded is that the Earth is really flat and that the moon landing, satellites, all of astrophysics actually is a manufactured hoax in order to keep people believing that the Earth is round and that we are insignificant specks on a planet revolving around a sun amongst billions of stars in the galaxy and trillions of galaxies in the universe. The main thrust of this line of thinking is that the flat Earth implies that there is a creator who has created us and us only as unique and special life forms. If we are insignificant specks, amongst an infinite amount of possible intelligent life, than there’s no meaning to our lives and it’s a way of keeping our psychic vibrations down so that “they” can control us through fear and violence. If we embrace our creator and see how special we are on a flat Earth than the sky’s the limit! Well, not really because the sky is acutually a dome that covers the disc of the world, so there would definitely be limitations to how high you can go.
A great deal of the Flat Earth claim is the countless videos that “prove” that the Earth is flat. People use camera footage of planes and skydivers in flight to show that there is no curvature of the world, they use computer simulations to show how a spinning sphere should react to light and shadow as opposed to a flat disc, and so on. Many of these videos are several hours long and it’s very hard to get through them unless you turn off your brain. My main point of resistance of watching an hour of “proofs” against a spherical planet is that they use science to discount the science that they dismiss. Part of believing in a flat earth implies believing that the scientific community has been in on an elaborate hoax for centuries. The discovery of the scientific method, the research, the exploration, the hundreds of years of data accumulated and verified through the ages is all false. That’s why Flat Earther’s commonly use the argument that you can't prove the earth is round because nobody’s ever seen it. Any picture used to counter that claim is dismissed as a fake. However, the logic used is flawed. Nobody has ever seen air, so how do we know it exists? I can blow up a balloon full of air, but then all you would have to say is that I’m conspiring to trick you and that the balloon is just an illusion I’ve created. Denying the scientific heritage and rigor that began in ancient times and stating that only seeing is believing is the opposite of science! Science does not make claims toward reality, just observations, guesses on why an observation may be, experiments to support or refute the claims, and then the repeatability and falsifiability needed to run the experiment over and over again in order to verify the conclusion.
That’s how we can trust that the Earth is flat and that space travel is real, and geez this is exhausting… In order to believe that the Earth is flat, you have to discount science all together, yet the “proofs” for the Earth being flat are all based on science! The “proofs” consist of arguments based on optics, angular velocity, shadow placement, mathematics, and physics. Well if you don’t trust science when it’s telling you something you don’t want to hear, how can you use it to prove the thing you want to hear? How convenient. It’s storytelling pure and simple, no different than when we worshipped fire and believed the gods must live in heaven because it always points upward. We used to think babies died if a shooting star was seen while the mother was in labor, yet we had no clue about germs and nobody thought maybe we should wash our hands before reaching up in there and pulling this baby out.
It’s dangerous to subscribe to this kind of thinking because it’s essentially a dumb person’s version of being smart. Most of you who have had terrible bosses know that there’s nothing worse than a person who too dumb to know how dumb he is and actually thinks he’s smart.
We do not need convenient stories to get us through life and to explain the unknown. We’ve been doing that for thousands of years and no internet or iPhones have popped up in that time. It wasn’t until we caught onto this whole scientific method thing that technology really took off. The result of better technology has allowed science to test the boundaries of things that were once theoretical and as we learn more about the nature of the universe, the more we realize we don’t know anything. Astrophysicists believe that the observable universe only account for 4% of what we can see. On top of that we are observing the universe expand, and not only is it expanding, it’s gaining speed as it expands. After working out the math, scientists have termed this mysterious phenomenon dark matter and dark energy. They have no idea what it is, but there sure it’s there because of math. That means with all our advancement and our technology, what we’ve figured out for sure is that we don’t know what 95% of the universe is made out of. Science also tells stories about the unknown, but seeks to prove or disprove the guesses we have.
Storytelling requires belief only and is a more comforting way of seeing the world, but they are just that- stories. Stories like Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and Jesus are there for children to grasp onto, but they are essentially lies, or in the case of Jesus an extremely long game of telephone. They are comforting, but we have to ask ourselves are we okay with being in the dark with blissful ignorance or do we try and make order out of this chaos the best we can and try to remain as close to the truth- There is no easy way of explaining the terrible and wonderful things that happen in our lives. Sometimes things just happen and we have to deal with it. I hope that we as a civilization continually move toward the terror that lies inside chaos so that we can become more in tune with the nature of the universe, that nature being 96% unknown, but perhaps we will be able to find some comfort in the chaos one day.
